THE STORIES BEHIND OUR SPECIALTY DRINKS

Friends, old and new, made and make Monarch. From the quotes on the wall, our signage, our bar, our tables - this was all done with the help of incredible humans. Through the Kickstarter, some have specialty drinks that carry their name. Here are the stories and faces behind some of your go-to drinks. 

THE ZEGEL Our darkest chocolate mocha is named after Joseph + Lacy Zegel. Board game geeks, southern transplants and D.C. residents, the Zegels make the most of every adventure - functioning unusually well with very little sleep. We love our dark chocolate mocha because, like the Zegels, it's the real deal - made with a bittersweet chocolate bar and slightly sweetened with pure cane sugar.

THE SHIELDS Our cuban latte's namesake is Joseph + Allie Shields. They call Nashville home and are parents to their first child, James. In between dominating their multiple jobs, building their family and pursuing doctorate degrees (go Allie!), they are known to open their home to any + all whose love language is quality time. The cuban is a creamier latte that still packs the punch and flavor of our espresso. If it's hot outside, there's nothing that will refresh you like an iced cuban.

THE PARKER Monarch's salty caramel latte takes after Fraser Parker. Fraser lights up any room and has never met a stranger. Through long walks + road trips, you'll find that her infectious personality is rooted in a transparency that few evoke. There's no better or more enthusiastic friend to have in your corner (esp. when you're trying to get the word out about your Kickstarter). The Parker is a real crowd pleasure because it's smooth + layered thanks to the actual caramel sauce (not syrup) that we use in. It makes all the difference. 

THE PARKER

Monarch's salty caramel latte takes after Fraser Parker. Fraser lights up any room and has never met a stranger. Through long walks + road trips, you'll find that her infectious personality is rooted in a transparency that few evoke. THE G Our dirty chai latte is named after Giselle Dy. "G" graduated from Birmingham Southern and is pursuing her doctorate in physical therapy. She's the best person to explore a place with because she's down to try anything. Dirty chais are her thing because they carry the benefits of chai (fights inflammation, strengthens immunity) with the umph of coffee. Our chai is locally brewed by TeaTown, and it's both spicy and herbal, taking notes from the fresh Thai Basil that it's infused with.

THE G

THE HALL PASS A specialty cocktail of ours is an ode to A.K. Hall Johnson, her husband Daniel Johnson and her parents and siblings. A.K. is a jewelry designer, business owner and a coder. She's refreshingly creative and the pair of U.A. grads is the best to travel with. (Especially if it's in New York City and you're on a hunt for cocktails.)   

THE HALL PASS

A specialty cocktail of ours is an ode to A.K. Hall Johnson, her husband Daniel Johnson and her parents and siblings. A.K. is a jewelry designer, business owner and a coder. She's refreshingly creative and the pair of U.A. grads is the best to travel with. (Especially if it's in New York City and you're on a hunt for cocktails.) 

 

THE FRESE Our coffee soda is inspired by Sara Frese - a.k.a. most loved camp counselor, social worker, English major-turned-med-school-student. The coffee soda is incredibly invigorating, bubbly and unique like its namesake. You can count on it to give you the energy boost you need without weighing you down. We mix iced coffee, ginger beer and lime - and there's no combination quite like it.

In addition to being #girlbosses of a food-tech startup, they are coffee fanatics that invest incredibly in the wellness of their team. They dream big - and our double concentrated single origin cold brew is the only thing that rivals their pure, unadulterated energy.

THE L+L COLD BREW

Elizabeth likes her decaf with a hint of vanilla, and we also recommend it cafe au lait style.

They've been incredible supporters of Tuscaloosa, huge fans of football (see Mary's quote on our wall) and great friends to us. THE TURBO LEMONADE We're making barista throwdowns a thing around here. Spencer Pennington won our first ever competition with his turbo lemonade. Along with three other baristas, Spencer made his own creation to be judged by over 50 participants. His combination of house-pressed lemonade, espresso, tonic + turbinado sugar wowed the crowd. Stay tuned to see what he and the rest of the crew dreams up next!

He's a coffee enthusiast who works in the Social Work school at UA. He is father to 4 girls and husband to his partner, Jamie. His children enjoy the hot chocolate's richness, made with an actual chocolate bar. It's the perfect drink for the kid in all of us.

THE BIG DADDY PFLED Perhaps the hardest drink to pronounce on the menu. (The P is silent.) The Big Daddy comes from Ben Pflederer who is just the kind of guy you'd imagine drinking a chai tea latte - introspective, loyal and good looking (Paul's man crush). He just made the move to Colorado to marry the love of his life. Our locally brewed chai isn't too heavy or overly sweet. You can make it your own by ordering it with our house-blended almond coconut milk.

THE TALENT

The branding, photography, craftsmanship, coffee and the ongoing creativity of Monarch is a community effort. We've intentionally chosen to work with talented individuals over corporations or manufacturers. We like to work with people who are friends or who quickly become them.
